Hello,
I would like to know more about the "Special rules for students and schoolchildren" that I have read here(http://www.bmvi.de/SharedDocs/EN/Artikel/LA/validity-foreign-driving-licences-in-germany.html). I come from Vietnam and now I am a full time student in HTW Berlin. I’ve stayed in Germany for 3 years. I’ve read that if I am a student I can keep using my driving license from my country and I would like to ask if is there anything else I should do or any additional document should I get so I can start driving here in Germany? It is almost certain that you have your normal residence ("Hauptwohnsitz") in Germany. Because you live here longer than 6 months (and even longer than 12 months - this eliminates another exception) there are no special rules that apply to your situation. Thus, at the moment you are not permitted to drive anything that requires a license.

If you want to change that you can convert your Vietnamese license into a German one. This requires you to do almost everything a German student driver would have to do (first aid training, eyesight examination, two exams) except one thing: You are not legally required to take any lessons. You could prepare for the written exam by yourself, but the driving exam will definitely need at least a couple of lessons in the car.

A first step would be to contact the local authorities ("Führerscheinstelle") about the paperwork you need to submit. This would include a translation of your Vietnamese license, proof of your status of residence ("Meldebestätigung" along with your passport), photos and so on. Next you should try to find a decent driving school, preferably one with experience in retraining foreigners. The fact that you are living in Berlin should make this easier.
